Adapter & Cable Quick Reference
When your device and monitor ports don't match directly, you need the right adapter. Here are the most common scenarios.
| You Have | Monitor Needs | What to Buy | Approx. Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB-C (with DP Alt Mode) | HDMI | USB-C to HDMI cable or adapter | $8–15 |
| USB-C (data only) | HDMI | USB-C hub with HDMI output (needs DisplayLink or DP Alt Mode from hub chipset) | $20–40 |
| HDMI | USB-C (video input) | HDMI to USB-C adapter (active, not passive) | $15–25 |
| Lightning (iPhone) | HDMI | Apple Lightning to HDMI adapter | $40–50 |
| USB-C (iPhone 15+) | HDMI | USB-C to HDMI cable | $10–15 |
| USB-C (with DP Alt Mode) | USB-C (monitor) | USB-C to USB-C cable (must support video, not charge-only) | $8–15 |
| Mini HDMI | HDMI | Mini HDMI to HDMI cable | $6–10 |
| No video output at all | Any | Not possible without a capture card or remote desktop solution | N/A |
How to Identify Your Device's Ports
USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode
Look for a small USB-C port with a "D" or "DP" symbol next to it, or a Thunderbolt lightning bolt icon. Check your device specs for "DisplayPort over USB-C" or "video output via USB-C."
HDMI Port
The standard trapezoid-shaped port. Full-size HDMI is common on laptops. Some ultrabooks skip HDMI entirely, which is a common surprise for buyers.
USB-C (Data Only)
Many budget laptops have USB-C ports that only handle data and charging. If the specs don't mention video or DP Alt Mode, assume it's data-only. This is the #1 compatibility trap.
Thunderbolt 3 / 4
Uses the USB-C connector shape but with a lightning bolt icon. Thunderbolt always supports video output and is the most compatible option for portable monitors.
Common Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
Assuming all USB-C ports output video
USB-C is a connector shape, not a capability. A USB-C port might only do charging and data. Always verify "DisplayPort Alt Mode" or "Thunderbolt" in your device's specifications before buying a USB-C monitor.
Using a charge-only USB-C cable
Some USB-C cables are wired for power only. If your monitor shows no signal, try a different cable that explicitly supports data and video (USB 3.1 or Thunderbolt rated).
Ignoring power delivery requirements
Your laptop might output video over USB-C but only provide 7.5W of power. If the monitor needs 15W, you'll get a display but the monitor battery drains or it won't turn on. A USB-C hub with PD pass-through solves this.
Forgetting about refresh rate limits
A monitor might support 4K but only at 30Hz over HDMI 1.4. For smooth mouse movement and video, you want 60Hz. Check the monitor's supported refresh rates per input port, not just the panel spec.
Not checking phone compatibility
Most Android phones do not support video output over USB-C. Samsung Galaxy S and Note series with DeX are the main exception. iPhones need an adapter. Don't assume your phone can drive an external monitor.
Edge Cases Worth Knowing
Samsung DeX
Galaxy S8 and newer, Note 8 and newer, and Galaxy Tab S4+ support DeX mode. Plug in a USB-C monitor and get a desktop-like experience. Some monitors need a firmware update for DeX compatibility.
Nintendo Switch
The Switch only outputs video in docked mode. You need the official dock (or a USB-C capture workaround) plus an HDMI cable to the monitor. Handheld mode won't work with any adapter.
Steam Deck
The Steam Deck supports DisplayPort Alt Mode over its USB-C port. Most USB-C portable monitors work directly. For HDMI monitors, a simple USB-C to HDMI cable does the job.
MacBook Air / Pro
All recent MacBooks with USB-C/Thunderbolt support external displays. M1/M2 MacBook Air originally supported only one external monitor. M2 Pro/Max and M3 series support more. Check your chip.
